Imitation Game, Bourne Directors Top Shortlist for Star Trek 3
Now that Roberto Orci has stepped down as director of the third installment of the Star Trek reboot, Paramount has whittled their choices for J.J. Abrams's replacement down to a shortlist of five directors: The Imitation Game's Morten Tyldum, Rise of the Planet of the Apes's Rupert Wyatt, Source Code's Duncan Jones, Safe House's Daniel Espinosa, and The Fast and the Furious and The Bourne Betrayal's Justin Lin.
According to Deadline, Rupert Wyatt may be Paramount's first choice, as he's the only one who is confirmed to have met with the studio. But Morten Tyldum and Justin Lin are nipping at his heels, and both of their careers are on considerable upswings. Tyldum's Imitation Game is considered to be a lock for several Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actress, and a possibility for a Best Director nomination. Justin Lin's Bourne Betrayal starring Jeremy Renner has been delayed in favor of another Matt Damon installment, but he has also been tapped to direct part of the second season of HBO's prestigious True Detective.
Orci was originally asked to replace Abrams, who left to direct Star Wars: The Force Awakens, although they both remain as producers. Orci, who co-wrote both 2009's Star Trek and Star Trek: Into Darkness, will also remain as co-writer. Shaun of the Dead's Edgar Wright, who famously split from the Ant-Man film over creative differences, was originally rumored to be the studio's top choice, but those rumors seem to be unfounded, as he did not make the most recent shortlist.
