Rumor Mongering: Viola Davis to Play Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad?
Yet another Oscar winner may get on the superhero bandwagon. In what Latino Review calls the "final superhero movie scoop of 2014," the rumor mongerers claim that Viola Davis has officially been cast in the role of Amanda Waller in the upcoming anti-hero/supervillain mash-up Suicide Squad.
This report remains unconfirmed as of this writing, but it was previously reported that Davis, Octavia Spencer and Oprah Winfrey had made the shortlist for the part of Amanda Waller, so it's perfectly plausible. If the report is true, Davis will join Jared Leto as the Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, Tom Hardy as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress.
Amanda Waller is an antiheroic government agent who is tasked with managing the Suicide Squad, a black ops task force within the government composed of incarcerated supervillains who enter into indentured servitude with the expectation of amnesty. Any of the aforementioned actresses would do a great job, I'm sure, but Davis's career is at an all-time high, and she's already proven that she can play an intimidating, antiheroic character with her acclaimed performance in How to Get Away with Murder.
The Suicide Squad film is expected to be released on August 5, 2016.
