Jenna Coleman to Stay on Doctor Who
The fate of Jenna Coleman's Clara seemed to be decided on yesterday's series 8 Christmas special, as it saw Clara and Peter Capaldi's twelfth Doctor say an emotional goodbye to each other. But now, Coleman has confirmed that she will, in fact, remain the Time Lord's assistant for another season.
Clara had been an assistant to the eleventh Doctor, played by Matt Smith, since the "Snowmen" Christmas special in 2012. But once the Doctor regenerated into Capaldi's current (and darker) iteration, the dynamic changed dramatically:
"The arrival of the 12th Doctor has just kind of dropped this whole bombshell and allowed the dynamic to totally change," Coleman said. "So I think just when Clara was feeling more comfortable in the relationship, it has suddenly thrown something new up."
Both Coleman and showrunner Stephen Moffat have been coy about Clara's fate in the upcoming ninth series. While Capaldi was confirmed to return, Coleman took longer to decide, which likely led to the ambiguous ending of "Last Christmas." But ultimately, she decided to stay on for at least one more season.
"I get a whole other series of stories with the Doctor and I couldn't walk away with the story being unresolved," Coleman said. "I think they've finally just reached a point where they really understand each other."
The ninth series of Doctor Who will begin filming in January and will air in late 2015.
