The Raid Martial Artists to Be Featured in Star Wars: The Force Awakens
After the disastrous CGI effects in the despised prequel trilogy, Star Wars: The Force Awakens promises to get back to the franchise's roots and utilize more practical effects. Now, J.J. Abrams and co. have taken steps towards those practical effects in their fight scenes by casting The Raid martial artists Iko Uwais, Yayan Ruyhian, and Cecep Arif Rahman.
First published by The Twitch, the trio of actors have reportedly been cast in the newest Star Wars film, although there is no word on what their specific roles will be. It seems safe to assume that their parts will be small, non-speaking roles however, as filming has already completed, and their specific set of skills would suit them to roles that are most important for effects-heavy scenes like action or fight sequences. Darth Maul was played by a martial artist in The Phantom Menace, which allowed for extremely elaborate fight choreography without over-use of CGI (in his scenes, anyway), so this would seem to bode well for The Force Awakens.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens comes out on December 18.
