Transformers: Age of Extinction Leads Razzie Nominations Shortlist
Sci-fi movies recently topped lists of the most pirated movies of 2014 as well as the most-viewed trailers of 2014. But now, sci-fi and fantasy films have achieved the more dubious distinction of dominating the 2014 Razzie Nominations shortlist, led by none other than our pick for the worst sci-fi movie of the year: Transformers: Age of Extinction.
The shortlist, first published by Variety, shows that the most recent Transformers movie is in contention for no less than nine Razzie nominations: Worst Picture, Worst Remake/Sequel, Worst Screenplay, Worst Screen Combo (for "any two robots, actors, or robotic actors"), Worst Supporting Actor (for T.J. Miller), and Worst Supporting Actress (for Sophia Myles and Nicola Peltz).
The list includes a whopping six out of our ten worst sci-fi movies of 2014: Transcendence received six nominations, Atlas Shrugged part III and the TMNT remake each received five, and Left Behind and I, Frankenstein each received four.
So we obviously agree with the Razzies' assessment in many ways, although they destroy their own credibility by assuming that calling Transformers "Trannies" as a derogatory term is a funny joke. Indiewire recently made some good points about why the Razzies are pretty much the worst, and certainly not a reliable barometer for which films or performances were actually the worst of the year.
