14 Can't-Miss Panels at Wizard World New Orleans 2015
New Orleans Comic Con is this weekend, and while it's not as big as San Diego or New York, there are still a ton of panels and guests that we're excited for. From the ultimate Marvel vs DC debate to Star Trek retrospectives to psychoanalysis of sci-fi characters and superheroes, and featuring exciting guests like Bruce Campbell, Michael Rooker, Jon Bernthal, Tom Felton, Evan Peters, and more, this is shaping up to be a very geeky weekend.
And we're pleased to announce that we'll be hosting a panel at Wizard World this weekend! Focusing on the psychology of The Walking Dead, our panel will feature "superherologist" Dr. Travis Langley, psychologist and Henderson State professor who wrote Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Night, as well as an upcoming book on our panel subject. He also has his own column in Psychology Today about the psychology of superheroes and sci-fi figures like The Doctor. Also joining us will be Langley's fellow professor at Henderson State Eric Bailey and Blastr editor -at-large Aaron Sagers.
Here are all the can't-miss panels at New Orleans Comic Con 2015!
Saturday, January 10
11:00 – 12:00PM BRUCE CAMPBELL'S "LAST FAN STANDING"
The ultimate geek contest for the ultimate geek icon, Bruce Campbell's "Last Fan Standing" is a trivia game show coming soon to CONtv, and it will be live taping at three different times over the weekend.
12:00 - 12:45PM BLOOD BROTHERS: PAUL WESLEY AND IAN SOMERHALDER
[Credit: The CW]
The Vampire Diaries may have gone downhill in the last couple of seasons, but we'd be lying if we said we weren't excited to see Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder, whom we also loved in Lost. "Going six seasons strong, the pair have made their mark on the long list of vampire-centric dramas. Catch them on the Wizard World stage where they'll answer fan questions and share stories from the set of Mystic Falls!"
12:00 – 12:45PM SEX, LOVE, AND SUPERHEROES II: WHO WANTS TO DATE A SUPERHERO?
Many people fantasize about dating their favorite superhero growing up, but in this panel, Travis Langley drops some truth bombs about the realities of dating a man or woman who has such a demanding occupation: "Would a superhero's love life be like that of a real world soldier, firefighter, undercover detective, or rock star? Frankly, who wants to date a superhero? They show up late for dates, run out on you at random times just to go save the world, and bring danger into your life simply by knowing you. Dr. Travis Langley explores superheroes' relationships, the human and superhuman nature of sex and love in capes and tights."
12:30 – 1:15PM 50 YEARS OF STAR TREK
50 years later, Star Trek's hold on popular culture has never waned. (Not to mention the scientific community, who still uses Star Trek for research.) "Let's boldly adventure through 50 years of the franchise that changed the world. Panelists will discuss various aspects of all the incarnations of Star Trek including the feature films; and a current state of the franchise."
1:00 – 1:45PM BACK TO HOGWARTS WITH TOM FELTON
"Best known for his role as Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, Tom Felton joins the Wizard World tour for a special Q&A with his fans! Hear behind-the-scenes stories about his life and career and learn where Tom plans to take his next adventure!" If only Jason Isaacs would be there too!
1:00 – 1:45PM HAIL HYDRA! WITH AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.'S BRETT DALTON
Ward's reveal as a Hydra double agent was one of the biggest moments of 2014, and now we can ask him all the burning questions about his ambiguously evil character.
1:30 – 2:15PM CIVIL RIGHTS AS REFLECTED IN COMIC BOOKS
Social justice in comic books and comic book adaptations have been front-and-center recently, from that disgraceful Milo Manara Spider-Woman cover to female Thor and black Captain America to the three major studios finally giving us Black Panther and female superhero movies. This panel will "explore how civil rights and social justice themes have played out in comic books over the years and show the impact they made on society."
2:00 - 2:45PM NO "BONES" ABOUT IT: KARL URBAN
Nerdy favorite Karl Urban gives a Q&A, and we will definitely be attending. "What do Star Trek, Star Trek- Into The Darkness, Dredd, Pathfinder, Priest, Doom, The Bourne Supremacy, The Chronicles of Riddick, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Ghost Ship all have in common? The talents of Karl Urban!"
3:00 – 3:45PM SURVIVING A KILLER TV SHOW WITH SARAH WAYNE CALLIES, JON BERNTHAL, SCOTT WILSON, AND ANDREW J. WEST
[Credit: Wizard World]
Meet the best and worst of (spoiler!) The Walking Dead's dearly departed as Sarah Wayne Callies (Lori Grimes), Jon Bernthal (Shane Walsh), Scott Wilson (Hershel Greene), and Andrew J. West (Gareth) give a panel. It should be interesting for fans, especially since Lori was one of the most universally despised characters in television history and Hershel was probably the saddest character departure on the show. In the panel, they will "share behind-the-scenes stories from the zombie apocalypse and give their fans a look into what projects they're working on next!"
4:00 – 4:30PM MEET GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY'S RAVAGERS: MICHAEL ROOKER AND SEAN GUNN
What does it say about Michael Rooker's career that Wizard World thinks Merle is one of his "good guy roles"? "While many have fit the brute, villain and psychopath type, Michael Rooker has also shown versatility in numerous 'good guy' roles in his career, none more apparent than the love-hate fan favorite Merle Dixon on AMC's acclaimed series, The Walking Dead. Moreover, Rooker's star continues to rise as with Marvel's intergalactic superhero team, Guardians of the Galaxy."
I love Michael Rooker on The Walking Dead, but I'm just as excited to see Sean Gunn, who played Kraglin in Guardians of the Galaxy and, more importantly, the hapless, lovable Kirk on Gilmore Girls:

5:00 – 5:30PM INSIDE X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST WITH EVAN PETERS
How much do you want to bet someone asks him about flipper sex? "Born with special abilities, mutants have fought for decades to be accepted by humankind. Their latest battle has taken place on the big screen in the smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past! Join the scene-stealing Quicksilver, Evan Peters (American Horror Story; Kick Ass,) he talks the summer's biggest blockbuster, working with incredible stars like Patrick Stewart & James McAvoy, his future projects & anything else YOU want to ask him!"
6:00 – 6:45PM MARVEL VS DC: THE BATTLE FOR SUPER CINEMA & TV
"Whether your loyalties lie with the Justice League or the Avengers, the stage is set for a live-action face-off between two comic giants on the big and small screen. As Marvel expands its connected universe on TV, Netflix and movies, DC has joined the action with a slate of shows and a whole lot of movies in the works. What does the battle mean for fans, and who will win? Join nerdy journalist Aaron Sagers, Editor At Large of Blastr.com, and other experts as we discuss this super showdown. Bring your loyalties and get ready for a great debate!"
Sunday, January 11
12:00 – 12:45PM BEHIND THE MASK WITH CAITY LOTZ
"Brought her to life" seems like an unfortunate choice of words, all things considered: "Protecting the streets of Starling City, Sara Lance A.K.A. 'The Canary' was a force to be reckon with. Caity Lotz brought her to life in The CW's Arrow and now you can meet her in person on the Wizard World stage! Get a peek behind the curtain of one of TV's hottest shows and bring your questions for this awesome Q&A!"
12:30 – 1:15PM THE WALKING DEAD PSYCHOLOGY: FIGHT THE DEAD, FEAR THE FREUD
Come meet the Outer Places team as we team up with a group of smart people and zombie experts to discuss some of the finer points of AMC's The Walking Dead:
"Do zombies sleep? Do they learn? How would people really react when dead friends, relatives, and millions of strangers rise to bite the living? Is there room for hope in the world of The Walking Dead? Find out as Dr. Travis Langley (Batman and Psychology; The Walking Dead Psychology), Eric Bailey (Henderson State University), Aaron Sagers and Outer Places' Janey Tracey look at what it takes to stay human when humans have lost the world."
We're excited for all of these panels and will be covering as many as possible, but can we just talk about this one for a minute?
4:00 – 4:45PM BEHIND THE MUSIC WITH SUGAR RAY'S MARK MCGRATH AND GOOD CHARLOTTE'S BILLY MARTIN
I like 90's nostalgia as much as the next person, but what is this?!
