Rooney Mara and Orphan Black's Tatiana Maslany Linked With Gareth Edwards' Star Wars Spin-Off
Prepare your attack of the clone headlines, because Orphan Black's Tatiana Maslany has reportedly been testing for a role in Gareth Edwards 2016 Star Wars spin-off movie. THR has learnt that Maslany is in the process of testing for the mystery role while Girl With the Dragon Tattoo star, Rooney Mara, is set to try out for the role later this week. Add to these reports the rumors of The Theory of Everything's Felicity Jones being high up on Edwards' most-wanted list, and it becomes pretty clear that the production is looking to get some truly top-class talent on board.
According to THR, Jones's chances of landing the role may be hindered by a scheduling conflict. The British star who just secured an Oscar nomination for her role as Jane Hawking in The Theory of Everything is scheduled to star in Ron Howard's upcoming sequel to The Da Vinci Code, Inferno. I would love to see Jones secure the role, but if she doesn't both Mara and Maslany would be incredible choices.
Fans and commentators are still almost completely in the dark as to the plot of Edwards' movie, but many agree that the rumors of it being a bounty hunter heist are credible. If this is the case, it's not hard to see either Maslany or Mara playing a bounty hunter, perhaps in a similar guise to Star Wars Rebels' Mandalorian, Sabine Wren?
Scheduled for release in December 16th 2016, Edwards' Star Wars Spin-Off is the first in a series of three standalone Star Wars movies with Josh Trank (Fantastic Four) appointed to direct the second in the installment. Judging by the type of talent Edwards is trying to attract, and the busy schedules such actors tend to have, it wouldn't be surprising if casting for this project was locked in within the next couple of months. In the meantime, let the rumors fly as to who Mara or Maslany could be playing. I for one would love to see Maslany play Mara Jade, but hey, that's just me.
