X-Men: Apocalypse Casts Storm, Cyclops, and Jean Grey
X-Men: Apocalypse has officially cast the young versions of our favorite mutants: Alexandra Shipp, Tye Sheridan, and Sophie Turner will play Storm, Cyclops, and Jean Grey respectively. Director Bryan Singer announced the news last night via Twitter:
The roles were originally played by Halle Berry, James Marsden, and Famke Janssen in previous installments of the X-Men series, but after the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past, the parts needed to be recast.
Writer Simon Kinberg said when the decision to recast the roles was first announced: "It'd be very hard to do, because Halle, Famke, and Jimmy and others have done such wonderful jobs of bringing those characters to life. But I also would have said before 'First Class' that there would be no actors who can stand alongside Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart."
Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart played Magneto and Charles Xavier, respectively, in the franchise, and were replaced in the "new generation" by Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy. Fassbender and McAvoy are both more established actors than Shipp, Sheridan, or Turner, but we can still hope that they have the acting chops to live up to their predecessors.
Shipp is best known for the recent Drumline sequel, as well as her starring turn in the controversial Aaliyah biopic by Lifetime. Turner is best known for her role as Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones, while Sheridan's career has mostly been in small, critically acclaimed indies like Tree of Life and a breakout supporting turn in Mud.
X-Men: Apocalypse is set to be released on May 27, 2016.
