Casting Call Reveals Daniel Bruhl Will Play Baron Zemo in Captain America: Civil War
It may seem like all anyone can talk about in the MCU right now is Avengers: Age of Ultron, but let's not forget that Captain America: Civil War is a mere 18 months away and could prove to be Marvel's most important movie in years. Making the prospect of a big screen Civil War all the more exciting was last year's announcement that the excellent Daniel Brühl would be playing the movie's lead villain. But up until now, we had no idea quite how Anthony and Joe Russo were going to be dispatching Brühl's plentiful talents. Enter a Disney casting call for the movie, which lets slip that Daniel Brühl will in fact be playing none other than Baron Zemo.
In Marvel comic book canon, Baron Heinrich Zemo was a brilliant Nazi scientist who wore a dark cowl to protect his identity and disfigured face. His plots to develop an array of villainous inventions were regularly foiled by the likes of Nick Fury and Captain America, leaving Zemo with an unwavering hatred for the pair. A later iteration of Baron Zemo saw Heinrich's son, Helmut, take up the role in an attempt to kill Captain America and avenge his father's death.
It's unclear how Baron Zemo will impact the overall story of Civil War, but it has been rumored that Brühl would not be the main villain in the movie, but instead will be merely introduced so he could go on to be the big bad in Marvel's other 2016 release, Doctor Strange. If true, this would be a strange move (excuse the pun) on the part of Marvel, not least because Zemo's interaction with Doctor Strange is minimal at best. That being said, the rumors of Brühl's role as the big bad in Doctor Strange are just that, rumors, albeit from a reliable source. In terms of Civil War's story, it's well known that Zemo has positive interactions with both Iron Man and Captain America, but his overall aims are far more sinister.
The announcement of Baron Zemo's introduction into the MCU will likely trigger rumors that Marvel will, at some point, look to introduce a Thunderbolts storyline in which Zemo creates a Supervillain collective, which included the likes of Beetle, Goliath and Fixer. After many of the world's superheroes are wiped out, Zemo and his cronies pose as heroes in an attempt to gain the trust of the public before taking over the world.
I'll be honest, I don't really care what they do with Zemo, I'm just over the moon that Brühl will be playing a significant role in the MCU!
Production on Captain America: Civil War is expected to commence in early April this year and will run through to early August. Captain America: Civil War will hit theaters May 6th 2016.
