David Tennant Will Play the Villainous Purple Man in Marvel's Jessica Jones
The Doctor Who and Marvel fandoms will soon collide when David Tennant takes on the role of Zebediah Killgrave, aka the Purple Man, in Marvel/Netflix's Jessica Jones series.
The Purple Man first appeared in Jessica Jones's origin story in the Alias comic series. In the series, Jones decides to quit the superhero business and become a private investigator in large part as a result of her kidnapping by Killgrave (which will seemingly be spelled Kilgrave in the show). He uses his mind control powers to force her to submit to his will and aid in his criminal endeavors for eight months, causing her to develop a complex, Stockholm syndrome-type relationship with him.
Leaked audition videos from AKA Jessica Jones recently stirred speculation that the Purple Man would be the primary villain of the show, which seems to be confirmed. There was some concern that this choice had the potential to be problematic from a feminist standpoint, as Jones was sexually terrorized by Killgrave in the comics, but I'm still of the mind that it completely depends on their treatment of the subject.
David Tennant is best known in geek culture for his wildly popular run as the tenth incarnation of the beloved Time Lord on Doctor Who. He is also coming off of a successful starring turn in the BBC murder mystery Broadchurch and its (less successful) American remake Gracepoint.
Marvel's AKA Jessica Jones will come out on Netflix sometime in 2015.
