Gotham to Introduce Joker Storyline Before the End of Season One
Gotham fans can expect to catch a glimpse of a young Scarecrow on tonight's episode of Gotham, "The Fearsome Mr. Crane" (and if we don't, that would be some seriously false advertising), but now the news has broken that another classic DC Comics villain will appear on the Batman prequel before the first season finale. Executive producer Bruno Heller recently revealed that none other than the Joker will factor into the proceedings before the season's out.
Although multiple sources behind the scenes had alluded to a longer wait for the fan favorite villain, Heller claimed in an interview with TV Guide that fan reaction has made them change their minds: "We've said you're going to be waiting a bit longer for it, but this is America — nobody wants to wait," Heller said with a laugh. "So, we will scratch the surface of that story, yes. But just scratch it — a little tap on the door."
As we've said many times before, one of Gotham's major flaws is being overstuffed with villains. With involved origin stories for Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman, Two-Face, Poison Ivy, and now Scarecrow interweaving in the first season, it already feels like the show has too many balls in the air. So while this news is exciting on its face, we'll wait to see how the Joker storyline is handled before passing judgment either way. Most likely, it will just be a passing mention/cameo appearance, which is probably all the show can handle right now.
Gotham's "The Fearsome Mr. Crane" airs tonight at 8pm on Fox.
