Marvel Announces All-Female Avengers Team for Secret Wars
Marvel made their "game-changing" Secret Wars announcement on The View this morning, and it didn't disappoint. The comics titan will continue its trend of improving diversity in its superhero narratives with an all-female Avengers team, which includes Marvel favorites such as She-Hulk, Dazzler, Medusa and Nico Minoru. The superheroines will star in their own monthly series called "A-Force" as part of Marvel's Secret Wars event.
The series will be written by G. Willow Wilson and Marguerite K. Bennett, and illustrated by Jorge Molina, and it sounds like there will be a refreshingly feminist take on the superhero genre. "I think that we're kind of asking some implicit questions with this lineup and one of them is: Do we respond to female superhero teams in the same way that we respond to superhero teams composed primarily or entirely of men?" Wilson said. "So it is a bit of a risk, but it's a risk that's been shown to work.
"In the past, when you had teams that were composed entirely of men and with maybe one woman, that was considered something very usual but to do the reverse was somehow unthinkable. We're at a time now where we can ask why that is."
Marvel's A-Force #1 comes out in comic stores in May.
