MMA Fighter Gina Carano to Co-Star with Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool
MMA fighter and actress Gina Carano has just joined Ryan Reynolds in the upcoming Fox adaptation of Deadpool, Marvel's "merc with a mouth."
Deadpool, or Wade Wilson, is a Marvel comics character who is known for his quick-witted banter and his tendency to break the fourth wall. In the upcoming film, Reynolds will play him as an assassin who undergoes an experimental treatment to cure his cancer that goes wrong, leaving him horribly scarred but also affording him with superpowers.
Carano has been cast as the Marvel Comics character Angel Dust, a superhero who is part of a team of X mutants called the Morlocks who live underneath the streets of Chicago for fear of social persecution. Although her character never came into contact with Deadpool in the comics (as far as I know), she is part of the X-Men mythology and the Deadpool movie will technically take place within the continuity of Fox's ongoing X-Men series.
Carano has a decorated MMA career, once hailed as the third best 66kg fighter in the world. In recent years she has also taken up acting, most notably starring in Haywire and Fast and Furious 6. She will also appear in the upcoming Bruce Willis actioner, Extraction.
The Deadpool film is set to be released on February 12, 2016.
