Kodi Smit-McPhee Cast as Nightcrawler in X-Men: Apocalypse
Between Young Ones and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Kodi Smit-McPhee has been on a sci-fi roll, and will continue that trend by taking on the mantle of the mutant superhero Nightcrawler in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse.
Nightcrawler is a blue-skinned mutant who has the ability to teleport himself, as well as a prehensile tail and superhuman flexibility, balance, and coordination. He was portrayed by Alan Cumming in X2, but has not appeared in the rebooted franchise thus far. In the comics, he was the biological son of fellow blue-skinned mutant Mystique, but considering that Kodi Smit-McPhee and Jennifer Lawrence are only six years apart, they will likely leave this out of his origin story (although who knows, really, considering the convoluted timeline).
X-Men: Apocalypse will take place ten years after the events of Days of Future Past, which means that many of the familiar faces from the original franchise will not be returning. But Smit-McPhee is just one of the extremely talented actors who will attempt to fill their shoes, along with Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Oscar Isaac, Evan Peters, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, and Alexandra Shipp.
X-Men: Apocalypse is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 27, 2016.
