Settlers of Catan Might Become a Movie or TV Show
Producer Gail Katz is making the dreams of stoned college kids everywhere come true, as she has just acquired the rights to the wildly popular role-playing board game Settlers of Catan, with the potential to adapt the game into a movie or television show.
"I've been wanting to see an adaptation of the game for years, ever since my Catan-obsessed college-aged kids introduced me to it," said Katz. "The island of Catan is a vivid, visual, exciting and timeless world with classic themes and moral challenges that resonate today. There is a tremendous opportunity to take what people love about the game and its mythology as a starting point for the narrative."
Settlers of Catan is a game in which players assume the roles of settlers attempting to establish colonies on an island called Catan. Over the course of the game, they decide how to expend their resources in order to build settlements, cities, and roads, as well as interacting with the other players' settlements. Although it might sound dry, it's incredibly addictive, and has become a pop culture phenomenon, inspiring spin-off games, books, stuffed animals, and now probably a movie (although a television show might work better, considering the complexity of the rules and the world-building).
But even if it is made into a movie rather than a television show, we can all take comfort in the fact that it's bound to be better than Battleship. And if we're casting our votes for which board game should get an adaptation next, I vote Candyland, hands down.
