Nashville's Laura Benanti Cast as Supergirl's Kryptonian Mom
Greg Berlanti's upcoming Supergirl TV show is starting to take shape and today we have learnt that Laura Benanti, of Nashville fame, has been cast in the role of Alura Zor-El aka Supergirl's mom. Much like Superman's parents, Alura sends Kara to Earth to escape the devastation on her home planet of Krypton. With Kara wrestling with her new-found powers, Alura is a constant source of guidance for the soon-to-be Supergirl.
Melissa Benoist has already been cast to play the titular hero, while Mehcad Brooks was recently announced in the role of Jimmy Olsen. Besides these three casting announcements, details on Berlanti's Supergirl series have been few and far between, although yesterday it was revealed that the hero will wear the iconic red cape that her character and cousin, Superman, are so well known for.
Laura Benanti has been most recently seen in a recurring role on ABC's Nashville series, but many will recognize the New Jersey-born actress from stints on Law and Order: SVU and Nurse Jackie.
CBS's Supergirl series is slated for a fall 2015 release.
