DC Comics Preview: Secret Origins of Barbara Gordon's Transformation from Oracle to Batgirl
Barbara Gordon has been on quite a journey in the last few years, transforming from Batgirl to Oracle and now back to Batgirl again. In the new Secret Origins from DC Comics, find out how Babs shed her Oracle persona and reverted to Batgirl:
In 1988's The Killing Joke, Barbara Gordon was paralyzed at the hands of the Joker. While in a wheelchair, she shed the moniker Batgirl and became Oracle, a hacker and superheroine in her own right. Then, in the company-wide relaunch in 2011, Barbara's mobility was restored and she became Batgirl once again. Both her transformation into Oracle and the restoration of her mobility were extremely controversial; some feminist critics lambasted the decision to paralyze her, citing patterns of extreme violence towards and de-powering of female characters in comics. But Oracle was ultimately a beloved character, credited with dismantling ableism in comics.
The new Secret Origins explains the origin story behind the shift from Oracle to Batgirl, and how exactly she was able to walk again. Here are the preview pages, first published on Hitfix:
