Agent Carter Showrunner Teases Plans for Future Seasons
Last night's Agent Carter could easily have served as a series finale, although we hope it doesn't, and it also left plenty of room for a continuation of Peggy's story. Unfortunately, there's been no official word on whether the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. replacement will get another season. But showrunner Tara Butters had only encouraging words to say on the matter, as she insists that she and the other writers have plans for potential future seasons.
"I don't see this as a show that only has a couple seasons in it," Butters told The Mary Sue. "This is a show that has as many seasons in it as we want, and as many seasons as we can find a good story for... I could write this show for the next five years and be perfectly happy."
And when asked if these future seasons would involve a time jump, in which an older Peggy would work alongside more modern characters in the Marvel Universe, Butters said, "We've talked about different avenues like that, about whether you jump time. I think there's still stories to be told with the people we've been introduced to in these eight episodes. But what I love about her job as a spy is she can go to Los Angeles at the same time period. She has the ability to go and do and be anything!"
The ratings for Agent Carter haven't been stellar, but they've been perfectly solid, and the positive reviews from critics and fans may go a long way to help this "limited series" get another season. And Marvel seems to be pleased with Agent Carter's performance; when The Hollywood Reporter asked after Marvel's reception of the show, Butters replied, "They seemed to be very happy with it. We didn't get very many notes, which we took as a good sign."
She and co-showrunner Michele Fazekas also tried to assuage concerns about the ratings: "This isn't a secret, but the TV business has changed," said Fazekas. "People don't watch shows the night of as much. If you look at the delayed viewing numbers, it almost doubles the night of ratings."
Following the Agent Carter finale last night, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will take its place, airing its midseason premiere on March 3.
