Supergirl Series Adds Ex-Superman Dean Cain and Ex-Supergirl Helen Slater to Cast
DC Comics loves reuniting multiple generations of the same superheroes. After casting original Flash John Wesley Shipp in their new Flash series (as Barry Allen's father, cutely enough), they've now cast Dean Cain and Helen Slater in "mystery roles" in the upcoming CBS Supergirl series. (As Kara Danvers's parents, maybe?)
Cain is famous for playing Superman in the beloved 1993 television series Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, while Helen Slater was the first actress to portray Supergirl in an (admittedly derided) live-action adaptation in 1984. They seem to have embraced their superheroic legacy in good stride, especially since they both appeared on the Superman prequel show Smallville in significant guest roles.
(Side note: The part of Kara's biological mother has already been filled by Nashville's Laura Benanti, but significantly enough, neither of Kara's foster parents have been cast yet. Hm.)
Cain and Slater join Glee and Whiplash's Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers/Supergirl, Ally McBeal's Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, True Blood's Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Homeland's David Harewood as DC Comics character Hank Henshaw, and Grey's Anatomy's Chyler Leigh as Kara's foster sister Alex Danvers.
CBS's Supergirl is slated to air this coming fall.
