Report: Drew Goddard to Write and Direct Marvel and Sony's Spider-Man Reboot
Drew Goddard is the chosen one. The Cabin in the Woods director has been selected as the man responsible for bringing Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or at least that is if you are to believe the perennial rumor mongers over at Latino Review. Naturally whenever a story like this breaks, it's wise to ensure you have a healthy amount of salt to pinch, but honestly, this 100% makes sense.
Selecting Goddard isn't just a brilliant move, it's a no-brainer. Not only does the director already have experience working with Joss Whedon (who clearly has a say in goings on at Marvel), he's also already played an integral part in a major Marvel Studios production. Goddard served as a Consulting Producer for the upcoming Marvel Netflix show, Daredevil, and the fact that he was attached to take on Sony's Sinister Six movie would suggest he's already got a solid understanding of what it takes to bring a comic book icon to the big screen. Unfortunately, if this rumor does turn out to be true, it's the strongest sign yet that Sony's Sinister Six movie will be scrapped for the foreseeable future. Directing a movie takes up enough time, but to write and direct a comic book adaptation, which is set to play a huge part in Marvel's third phase of movies, means Goddard is going to be dedicating 100% of his professional time to this endeavor.
Another interesting tidbit from Latino Review's report is a comment on Spidey's role in future MCU movies. According to their tipster, Spidey won't be getting a new origin story (thank the stars), but will instead be a high-school aged hero whose powers are already fully developed. The report also suggests that much of the new Spider-Man movie will see the web-slinger fighting Iron Man and essentially auditioning to secure a place with the current crop of Avengers.
Up until now, much of the discussion around Marvel's Spider-Man has centered around who would be playing the titular hero, but with a writer and director in place and a July 2017 release date looming, it could be that a casting announcement that the studios are now finally in a position to press on with their casting plans. Just who will secure the coveted role, though, remains to be seen.
