New Ex Machina Trailer: The Turing Test Has Never Looked More Sinister
Ex Machina has always been described as a "sci-fi thriller," but while previous promos have emphasized the intellectual, philosophical side of the film, this trailer tries to play up the creepy thrills:
Oscar Isaac's CEO seemed like a shady character before, but now he seems like a straight-up villain. There's also an interesting juxtaposition of two lines that we heard in the previous trailer, but not together: "did you know that I'm here to test you?" and "don't believe anything he tells you," which seems to imply that Domhnall Gleeson's character might not be testing Ava at all. Indeed, her line "I'll be testing you today," indicates that she might be testing him. I have no idea how that would work, but it's certainly intriguing.
Here's the official synopsis for Ex Machina:
Alex Garland, writer of 28 Days Later and Sunshine, makes his directorial debut with the stylish and cerebral thriller, EX MACHINA. Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company's brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test-charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan's latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated, seductive––and more deceptive––than the two men could have imagined.
Ex Machina comes out in theaters on April 10.
