12 Monkeys Renewed for a Second Season on Syfy
Syfy's unexpectedly decent Terry Gilliam adaptation, 12 Monkeys, will return for a second season next year. Natalie Chaidez will step down as she becomes showrunner to Gale Anne Hurd's Syfy drama Hunters, for which she wrote the pilot script.
12 Monkeys, which stars Aaron Stanford, Amanda Schull, and Emily Hampshire, debuted with plenty of buzz at the beginning of 2015, and has managed to gain viewers in recent weeks. Its most recent episode on March 6 was up by 6%, and although it's in the Friday night "death slot," it has performed well in delayed viewing numbers. It has also received a decent amount of critical acclaim, especially for a Syfy show, receiving a 61% on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season.
I was pleasantly surprised by the 12 Monkeys pilot, as it had excellent pacing, perfectly adequate acting, and seemingly had a handle on its time travel concepts. Unfortunately, over the next few episodes, the logic of the time travel fell apart spectacularly, but that being said, it's still an entertaining show with plenty of potential, and demonstrates that Syfy's attempt at a renaissance may very well be a success.
The next episode of 12 Monkeys will air on March 13, with the first season finishing up on April 10. The second season will air in early 2016.
