X-Files Reboot Will See Return of Smoking Man, Walter Skinner, and More
We've known that David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are on board for the X-Files reboot, which was necessary for most fans to even accept the idea to begin with. But while Mulder and Scully may be the only absolute necessities, the original show was also defined by its supporting cast. According to Duchovny, the Smoking Man, AD Skinner, John Doggett, and Monica Reyes will all be back for the reboot.

The return of the Smoking Man, played by William B. Davis, is the most exciting news, as he is probably the most iconic character to come out of The X-Files aside from Mulder and Scully. His standalone episode, "Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man," was widely held to be one of the best of the series, and earned the show its first Emmy nomination for directing. As a fan, I'm excited to have him back, as he's everything a great villain should be: enigmatic, frightening, complex, and at times sympathetic.

And although he's not quite as necessary to the proceedings, I'm also really glad that Mulder and Scully's trusty ally AD Skinner will return. He was always an extremely likable character, and I've enjoyed Mitch Pileggi's work on The X-Files as well as Stargate: Atlantis.

But on the flip side, bringing back Doggett (Robert Patrick) and Reyes (Annabeth Gish) seems like a mistake. I like Patrick as an actor, and Gish is fine as well, but both characters paled in comparison to Mulder and Scully, and were not nearly compelling or developed enough for the viewers to miss them. Maybe if they just came back for a one-off that would be fine, but making them regular characters again will just remind the viewers of the last couple of seasons, and therefore infuriate them.

The X-Files reboot will consist of a six-part limited series, to air on Fox sometime this summer.
