Report Claims that Han Will Shoot First in Star Wars Digital Release
< >
Could Han be getting ready to finally shoot first again? Earlier this week we received the most excellent news that all six Star Wars movies would finally be getting a digital release, which would come complete with a ton of bonus features. The joy of that news was tempered somewhat by the revelation that the versions being released digitally would be the ones that George Lucas and his team butchered with unnecessary tweaks, changes and CGI. Most fans were able to deal with the bonus CGI, but one thing that really ground our gears was the bewildering change that Lucas made to the scene in Star Wars: A New Hope, in which Han Solo settles a score with Greedo.

Since then, T-shirts bearing the slogan "Han Shot First" have been a top seller among Star Wars fans, and the movement in favor of the original cantina scene remains as strong today as it was when the changes were first made. Now, a rumor has been posted by the serial rumor-mongers over at BadAssDigest, who claim that their sources believe LucasFilm will change this one scene back to its original format, purely for the purpose of the digital releases.

Before we proceed, it's worth stating that whenever rumors like this are posted, it's always wise to read them with a healthy pinch of salt, so let's try not to get too carried away.

Logistically, this move doesn't make much sense, but logically it may be a smart move on LucasFilm's part. To change one scene for the purpose of a digital release ruins continuity with all the movie's other iterations, but what it would do is stimulate sales. With a scene in which Han once again shot first, these digital releases would become a must-have possession prompting the many hardcore fans who already own DVDs of the movies in their digitally remastered formats to get online and part with their money.

This could all be for nothing, but such is the feeling to the Han/Greedo cantina scene, it's not completely unfathomable that LucasFilm would want to give a nod to their fans in this most subtle of ways. Personally, I'm still hoping Yub Nub makes it back to the end of ROJ, but I may be in the minority there.

The Star Wars Digital Release comes online on Friday 10th April 2015.
