Chris Hemsworth Says Thor Won't Appear in Captain America: Civil War, But Will Appear in Both Avengers: Infinity War Films
The clock is ticking, as several of our beloved Avengers' contracts are quickly running out, including Chris Hemsworth's. The Thor actor has three Marvel movies left on his contract, and in a recent interview with Collider, he revealed exactly which movies he is attached to, shedding some light on Thor's fate in the MCU.

"I'm three films away from [the end of my contract]; I've got Avengers 3 and 4 and I've got Thor 3."

Captain America: Civil War is a notable omission, as many of the Avengers are set to appear in that massive superhero conflict. Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. are confirmed to appear as ringleaders Captain America and Iron Man, respectively, as well as Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), and Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther). Kevin Feige also may have indirectly confirmed yesterday that Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch will appear, and there are, of course, a cornucopia of rumors about Spider-Man. But it makes sense that, aside from Iron Man, whose presence is absolutely essential, Marvel would want to save the headlining Avengers for their own movies. So of all the remaining Avengers, it was probably always more likely that Hulk would appear than Thor.

But Hemsworth's contractual obligation to appear in both Avengers: Infinity War movies may serve to dispel certain rumors about Thor's fate in the MCU. Kevin Feige has teased that the Avengers roster would change after Avengers: Age of Ultron, which in conjunction with rapidly expiring contracts has led to rampant speculation about deaths and departures. There have been rumors that Avengers: Infinity War pt 1 would feature an entirely new team of Avengers while all of the old guard is dead or otherwise engaged. Thor was specifically predicted to be stuck in a galactic prison after catastrophic events in Thor 3: Ragnarok.

That being said, just because he's contracted doesn't necessarily mean he'll actually appear, and Marvel could easily change their minds about when to exercise his contract. And before you get too sad about Thor dying or departing the team after Avengers: Infinity War pt 2, Hemsworth could still renew his contract, much like Robert Downey Jr. did for Avengers 2 and 3. But for now, it seems that Thor will play a prominent role in all the group efforts after Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Avengers: Age of Ultron comes out in theaters on May 1, while Captain America: Civil War will be released on May 6, 2016, Avengers: Infinity War pt 1 on May 4, 2018, and Part II on May 3, 2019.
