With the recent revelation at Star Wars Celebration that the adorable roller droid from the Star Wars is a physical effect, the first thought (aside from "aw!") was "How does it work?" Super fan David Woolery has come up with a detailed infographic describing how such a droid would function, via Psych Geeks:

It seems that the key is magnets holding the head in place while the body rotates, which is relatively intuitive. It's also essentially the key to this amazing DIY mini-BB-8 built by industrial engineer Christian Poulsen:

Writing in Make Zine, Poulsen spoke for all of us describing his reaction to BB-8 rolling onstage at Celebration: "As I watched it roll around my only thought was 'need!' …So I made one." He used a Sphero 1.0 for the body, polyurethane foam surfaced with spackle for the head, and neodymium magnets to connect the head to the body.
