J.K. Simmons is set to headline the Starz drama Counterpart, which is being described as an "espionage thriller with a metaphysical twist."

According to THR"Simmons will [star as] Harold Silk/Prime, a lowly cog in a bureaucratic UN agency turning the last corner of a life filled with regret when he figures out the agency he works for is guarding a secret: A crossing to parallel dimension. Through Howard and his counterpart on the other side, the show carries themes of identity, idealism, what ifs and lost love."

J.K. Simmons is just coming off of an Oscar win for his supporting role in Damien Chazelle's Whiplash, but he's also known for nerdy roles such as Marvel Comics character J. Jonah Jameson in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films.

Starz is currently considering Counterpart for a two-season pick-up, with the first two episodes directed by Morten Tyldum, who was recently nominated for an Oscar for his work on The Imitation Game.
