The CW Confirms Caity Lotz Is Playing White Canary in Arrow/Flash Spin-Off 'Legends of Tomorrow'
We knew that fan favorite Caity Lotz was jumping ship to the Arrow spin-off, Legends of Tomorrow, but for obvious reasons, it was unclear which character she would play. Today, during a press conference call, The CW confirmed that Lotz would play White Canary, a DC Comics villain created for Gail Simone's Birds of Prey.

Lotz previously played Sara Lance on Arrow, in which she eventually took on the costumed superhero moniker Canary. Fans were devastated when she was (spoiler!) killed off at the beginning of the third season, and then confused when she was cast in the Arrow/Flash spin-off, Legends of Tomorrow. Now we know that she is playing a different character, albeit related to Sara Lance in some way, which The CW claimed would become clear during the upfronts later today.

We're happy to see Lotz back on our screens in whatever capacity; however, it is another in a long string of Arrow whitewashings. In the last couple of seasons, the DC Comics characters Ra's al Ghul and Sin have both been played by white characters, although they're both portrayed as non-white in the comics. I realize that they wanted to keep the "Canary" name in there, but you'd think they could have chosen a superhero who was already Caucasian.

The CW also released an official synopsis:

When heroes alone are not enough… the world needs legends. Having seen the future, one he will desperately try to prevent from happening, time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter is tasked with assembling a disparate group of both heroes and villains to confront an unstoppable threat - one in which not only is the planet at stake, but all of time itself. Can this ragtag team defeat an immortal threat unlike anything they have ever known? DC'S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW stars Victor Garber ("The Flash," "Alias"); Brandon Routh ("Arrow," "Superman Returns"); Arthur Darvill ("Doctor Who"); Caity Lotz ("Arrow"); Ciarra Renee ("Pippin"); Franz Drameh ("Edge of Tomorrow"); with Dominic Purcell ("The Flash," "Prison Break"); and Wentworth Miller ("The Flash," "Prison Break"). Based on the characters from DC Comics, DC'S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Greg Berlanti ("Arrow," "The Flash," upcoming "Pan"), Marc Guggenheim ("Arrow," "Eli Stone," "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters"), Andrew Kreisberg ("Arrow," "The Flash," "Eli Stone," "Warehouse 13") and Sarah Schechter ("Arrow," "The Flash," upcoming "Pan").

Legends of Tomorrow is set for a midseason premiere during the 2015-2016 television season.
