The Title of the New Planet of the Apes Movie Has Been Revealed
< >
Last summer's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes continued the surprise success of the franchise's reboot, pleasing critics and fans alike and becoming a huge global blockbuster. Now Collider has revealed the title of the upcoming sequel, which will raise the stakes considerably: War of the Planet of the Apes.

The format for all of these movies' titles is incredibly clunky and ugly (Rise of the Dawn of the War of the Planet of the Apes), but aside from that, this title does everything it's supposed to do. The events of both of the previous films have led to full-on war between the humans and apes; in the last film, the apes fired the proverbial first shot against the humans under the leadership of the villainous Koba. Although Koba is history by the end of the movie, ape leader Caesar (Andy Serkis) tells the human Malcolm (Jason Clarke) that "War has… already begun. Ape started war. And human… Human will not forgive." So the title for the next movie might be a little on-the-nose, but it gets the job done.

Director Matt Reeves is quoted as saying that the next film will focus on Caesar's journey as the leader of the apes: "[War of the Planet of the Apes] is about him becoming the seminal figure for ape history. [It's] like myth ascension, him becoming the ape Moses, for lack of a better sort of character to model him after." It's interesting that he uses a religious metaphor to describe the film, especially since we likened the ape/human conflict to religious tensions in the Middle East in our review of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

War of the Planet of the Apes comes out in theaters on July 14, 2017.
