Gillian Anderson's Robot Overlords Will Get Its Own Spin-Off TV Series

Robot Overlords, the alien invasion film starring Gillian Anderson and Ben Kingsley, is now being made into a TV show. There are no casting announcements yet, and it's currently being characterized as a "spin-off," which makes us less optimistic that the original cast will reprise their roles, but we can still dream for now.

The official synopsis for the film reads, "After the Earth is conquered by alien robots, humans are implanted with tracking devices and must stay inside or risk incineration by robot sentries."

"This series will really expand the canvas of the robot occupation, and we are aiming to make an explosive show that the U.K. will be very proud of. Stay in your homes!," said Robot Overlords producer Piers Tempest.

Robot Overlords premiered in the UK in March, and is expected to be released in the US in July. It didn't perform particularly well at the UK box office, and has decidedly tepid reviews so far, with a 58% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. So I'm not really sure why this movie, of all things, would be made into a television show, but I might watch it if Gillian Anderson is on board.

"'Robot Overlords' is a great British sci-fi brand in the tradition of classics such as 'Quatermass' and 'Doctor Who' - packed with special effects and rebellious excitement," said Tony Wood, head of the production company. I haven't seen the movie, but I'm not sure how much I believe the Doctor Who comparison, especially considering that one review called the film a "rusty Doctor Who episode." But that likely means the premise has some potential, especially if they gear it towards younger audiences.
