Will Star Wars Rebels Feature a Tie-in With Star Wars: Rogue One?
Other than the cute mental picture of father-daughter geek synchrony, Whitta's announcement didn't garner much of a reaction beyond the odd nod of approval from most fans. But then we all remembered that Whitta was the original screenwriter on Gareth Edwards' upcoming Star Wars Anthology movie, Star Wars: Rogue One, and proverbial light bulbs began to light up above heads everywhere. Could it be possible that Whitta is working on a Rebels/Rogue One tie-in episode?
Now, we already know that Simon Kinberg has completed work on the script for the Star Wars Rebels season 2 Finale, which means it's very likely that the script Whitta is working on was for an episode scheduled for some time in Season 3. When you consider that Season 3 of Rebels is probably going to start airing in Fall 2016, it all appears to line up very nicely with Rogue One's December 16th release date.
It's not just the real world timelines that are matching up, either. As we all know, Star Wars Rebels is set roughly 5 years before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, while Star Wars: Rogue One, which charts the daring mission to steal the Death Star plans, is probably going to be charting some very similar territory.
Finally, if you need any further convincing.....both the TV show and movie feature Rebels. Convinced?
If this all pans out to be true, it will be the biggest demonstration yet of how LucasFilm is going to tackle the challenge of creating a true Star Wars Cinematic Universe.
This is also the perfect segway to us telling you how entertaining Whitta's Twitter account is. With constant snarky updates about every day geek life, it's a must read for any self-respecting nerd. Here's a small sample of his recent comments....
Game of Thrones has become like homework now: I know I have to do it, but don't really look forward to it, and I do it late on Sunday night.— Gary Whitta (@garywhitta) May 25, 2015
In a sickness-induced fever dream I just slid into a parallel reality where Castle was canceled after 13 eps & Firefly is in its 8th season.— Gary Whitta (@garywhitta) May 13, 2015
