More Than 13,000 Fans Sign Petition Urging Disney to Reconsider Cancelling Tron 3
It has been a roller coaster ride for Tron fans of late. In March it was revealed that Disney had plans for a third Tron movie, while just a few weeks later, we learnt that Tron Legacy stars, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde were set to return for the project. But, after all that excitement, this past weekend brought with it the crushing news that Disney had pulled the plug on Tron 3, leaving fans at a loss to explain the sudden turnaround.

To express their dismay at the Tron 3's cancellation, fans of the franchise have started the circulation of a petition which urges Disney to rethink their decision. At the time of writing, the Revive Tron 3 petition at Change.org has received over 13,000 signatures in the space of just 3 days, taking it well on its way to achieving the goal of 15,000 set by the petition's intiator, Lucas Lowman.

"Tron: Legacy grossed over 400 million dollars and helped more fully realize the world created in the original Tron," reads the petition's statement. "It's a shame that Disney has elected not to move forward with a third Tron film as the universe is ripe to be explored. Sign this petition so that we may show Disney that The Grid is too great to never be shown again and to prove that Flynn lives.

While many will be quick to point out that the studio never officially greenlit the project, it was widely agreed that preparations for the production had reached advanced levels, with Jared Leto rumored to be in negotiations for a role and a fall production date seeming likely. Various commentators are stating that Tomorrowland's poor performance at the box-office has sown seeds of doubt among the studio's executives, while others have argued the studio simply didn't believe a third Tron movie held enough value given a schedule which is packed with, among other things, live-action reboots of Disney classics and blockbuster entries into their Marvel and Star Wars franchises. If the latter is true, a petition with this many signatures can't hurt Tron 3's prospects, especially after the way fan voices were heard with Fox's Deadpool movie, but you have to think that it's going to take a far bigger gesture to get Joseph Kosinksi's project back on the books.
