Z for Zachariah is one of our most anticipated sci-fi films of the year, and this trailer demonstrates all the reasons why. Even this limited amount of footage is tense, thrilling, and filled with atmospheric dread, with amazing performances from stars Margot Robbie, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Chris Pine:

Z for Zachariah received overwhelmingly positive reviews at Sundance, with critics citing the performances, the slow-burn tension, the character development, and philosophical underpinnings as the highlights of the film. The ending was polarizing, with many opining that it devolved into a soap operatic climax, and others insisting that the ending was "poetic" and would be more fully appreciated upon further viewings. But even with that point of contention, the film enjoys great early buzz, with an 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and a distribution deal with Lionsgate.

Here's the official synopsis, as well as a new poster:

In the wake of a nuclear war, a young woman survives on her own, fearing she may actually be the proverbial last woman on earth, until she discovers the most astonishing sight of her life: another human being. A distraught scientist, he's nearly been driven mad by radiation exposure and his desperate search for others. A fragile, imperative strand of trust connects them. But when a stranger enters the valley, their precarious bond begins to unravel. Z FOR ZACHARIAH is inspired by the novel of the same name by Robert C. O'Brien, published posthumously in 1974, and was created by Pall Grimsson and adapted for the screen by Nissar Modi (Breaking At The Edge).

Z for Zachariah comes out in theaters on August 21.
