5 Potential Villains for Marvel's Doctor Strange Movie
It seems like every day we find out something new related to Marvel's upcoming Captain America: Civil War, but that's not the only movie the House of Ideas has planned for 2016. Doctor Strange is heading to theaters in November of next year, and other than the fact that Benedict Cumberbatch is playing Stephen Strange, and Tilda Swinton's rumored appearance as his mentor, the Ancient One, we know very little about what characters will be in this movie. So before the casting rumors heat up, let's take a look at who we expect to be the villain in Marvel's first foray into the world of the Sorcerer Supreme.
Mordo is Strange's archnemesis, and should be considered the leading candidate to face off against him in the film. Mordo is a sorcerer of comparable ability to Strange, and the Ancient One, whom he later plotted to kill, also trained him. He has serious jealousy issues when it comes to Stephen Strange, which could open the door for a Loki-like performance from the right actor.
Right behind Mordo in importance to Doctor Strange's story is the immortal Dormammu. This demon-like entity is incredibly powerful, and would by far be the biggest threat Marvel has ever put on screen; at least until Thanos gets his infinity gauntlet. Dormammu is the Lord of the Dark Dimension, and if the Doctor Strange movie is going to be as dimension-spanning as we expect, the Dark Dimension would likely be the first stop.
Just in case Dormammu ends up being too powerful for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Mephisto could make for a nice substitution. The devil-like embodiment of evil has already appeared on screen, albeit appearing quite differently than in the comics, in the 2007 Ghost Rider film starring Nic Cage. Normally this would right a character off, but Ghost Rider's rights have since reverted back to Marvel so he's free for them to use as they please. Plus, Mephisto plays a big role in the infinity gauntlet story in the comics as an ally to Thanos, so if Marvel wanted to follow that same path in Avengers: Infinity War they could introduce Mephisto in Doctor Strange to continue that 'It's all connected' business that Marvel does so well.
Morgan le Fay
We haven't really seen a lead female villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet, and Morgan would be a great one to start with. She's the half-faerie sister of the legendary King Arthur, and is gifted in magic (just like every other person Doctor Strange knows, basically), but she's also crazy and evil. This is a character we would dearly love to see make a big screen appearance.
Another dimension ruler/immortal demon, Nightmare lords over the Dream Dimension. He has the ability to pull sleeping people into his dimension, which could make for some pretty scary Freddy Kruegeresque moments and subsequently take the MCU down an all new Horror route. Strange and Nightmare have faced off many times over the years, and not many people would complain if he ended up being the movie's big bad.
