First Variant Cover for Marvel's Star Wars: Shattered Empire is Revealed
Between now and December 18th, LucasFilm will be releasing an unprecedented level of new Star Wars novels, comic books and childrens' stories, all as part of their Journey to the Force Awakens. In total, no fewer than 20 new Star Wars stories will be released in the run-in to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, all of which will help fans understand what went on during the turbulent years after the Imperial collapse seen in Return of the Jedi. The first title to be published in the series will be Marvel's Star Wars: Shattered Empire, and today the first variant cover for the Issue #1 of the series has been revealed courtesy of StarWars.com.

As the Marco Checchetto variant cover suggests, Star Wars: Shattered Empire picks up immediately after the destruction of Death Star II. Once the last verses of Yub Nub have been sung, the likes of Leia, Luke, Han, and the rest of the Rebel Alliance must all start work on filling the power vacuum left by the defeated Empire.

Some 30 years elapse between the end of Return of the Jedi and the beginning of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and that means there's an awful lot of background to be filled in before the release of JJ Abrams' movie on December 18th. Other titles in the Journey to the Force Awakens will include Chuck Wendig's novel, Star Wars: Aftermath, a new Princess Leia story entitled Moving Target, a Luke Skywalker story called Weapon of a Jedi, and Smuggler's Run, which follows the adventures of Han Solo.

Star Wars: Shattered Empire #1 is released in September.
