Sony Expected to Greenlight Sci-Fi Romance 'Passengers' Starring Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence
It's hard to believe that any film starring Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence would have trouble entering production, but Passengers has been in development for several years now. Sony is currently deciding whether to greenlight production on the film to start in the fall, and according to Deadline's sources, the monstrous success of Jurassic World makes it extremely likely that the film will move forward.

According to the official synopsis, Passengers is "set on a spacecraft in the future, with thousands of passengers making an interstellar voyage to a distant new planet. One passenger awakens from cryogenic sleep 90 years before anyone else and decides to wake up a female passenger, sparking the beginning of a love story.

Passengers should have been a safe bet from the get go, considering its pedigree. Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence have both been on career highs for several years now, the script was written by Prometheus and Doctor Strange's Jon Spaihts, and Oscar-nominated Imitation Game director Morten Tyldum is attached to direct. But the script first made the Black List in 2007 and still hasn't been made, mostly as a result of the autonomous nature of the script. It's an original story that wouldn't necessarily spawn any sequels, but is still big-budget sci-fi fare, which makes it a risk.

The high price tag originally made Sony balk, as Deadline reports that the budget came in at $117 million. But after Jurassic World's huge opening weekend, industry insiders are convinced that Sony will ultimately decide to let the film go forward. And this makes sense, considering that not only Chris Pratt has proven that he can helm the highest-grossing opening of all time, but Jennifer Lawrence was the highest-grossing actor of 2014 and shows no signs of slowing down.

Deadline reports that the budget will likely be reduced to a more comfortable $100 million, but there's almost no chance that the movie won't get made. "The answer is, [Sony] will make it, perhaps at a slightly trimmed budget."
