Ewan McGregor Wants to Be in a Star Wars Anthology Movie
Will Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi appear in Star Wars: Rogue One? McGregor recently stated that he would be willing to return to the franchise as the beloved Jedi knight:
"I'd be happy to do the story from episodes three where I finish up and Alec Guinness starts," he said at this weekend's Edinburgh Film Fest.
McGregor wouldn't return to the main Star Wars series, as the continuity of The Force Awakens takes place after the original trilogy, so after Alec Guinness began to play the older Obi-Wan. But he could return to the anthology series, as they can take place anywhere in the Star Wars timeline. This technically means we could see him in Star Wars: Rogue One, the first in the anthology series, as it takes place after Revenge of the Sith but well before the original trilogy starts. That might be unlikely, however, as the film doesn't actually focus on Jedi knights, but on other individuals who use the Force.
McGregor also told a touching story about seeing his uncle, Denis Lawson, play Wedge in the original trilogy, and how Star Wars first inspired him to go into acting as a career. "I remember going to see him in Star Wars in my shorts and red socks when my mum picked us up from school. I was six and it blew my brains out and that was it. I remember saying of Denis when I was nine, 'I want to be an actor.'"
So although he definitely won't be part of The Force Awakens, or any of the subsequent films in that continuity, he's still excited for the film as a fan. He said of the most recent trailer: "it looks like they've absolutely nailed it."
Star Wars: The Force Awakens comes out on December 18, while Star Wars: Rogue One comes out in theaters on December 16, 2016.
