New Heroes: Reborn TV Spot Shows a World Without Heroes
"Where are the heroes?" That's the question on everyone's mind in this incredibly depressing promo for Heroes: Reborn:

I have to admit, I didn't see this coming. Of all things, I never thought Heroes would go the "gritty" route, but this promo was bleaker than anything we've seen from the show so far. It still isn't subtle, I'll grant you that, but the aesthetic is darker, more realistic, and less comic book-ish, and the content was effectively sad, even haunting. It's possible that the actual show won't change its tone as much as this promo indicates, especially since none of the main characters appear in this footage, but it's still jarring.

If the show does resemble this chilling TV spot, I would be torn as to whether this affords the show more or less promise. On the one hand, the first season of Heroes was so successful partially as a result of its sense of fun and lack of too much self-seriousness. But on the other hand, times have changed since then; the quality of television shows has increased tremendously and viewers' expectations have gone up along with them. So if the reboot is more ambitious, that would actually be encouraging, because it shows that they're trying to build on the potential of the initial premise of the original show in order to create a new show that fits into the current TV landscape, rather than just riding on Heroes's coattails.

Heroes: Reborn stars Chuck's Zachary Levi, Once Upon a Time's Robbie Kay, and Orphan Black's Dylan Bruce, as well as returning cast members Masi Oka, Greg Grunberg, Jack Coleman, Noah Gray-Cabey, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Sendhil Ramamurthy, and Cristina Rosa. The series (season?) premiere will air on September 24 at 8pm on NBC.
