Bryan Singer Confirms Fantastic Four/X-Men Crossover in Early Development
Rumors have been swirling for months that an X-Men/Fantastic Four crossover is in the works, but considering that the Fantastic Four reboot hasn't even come out yet, this seemed more like wishful thinking than anything else. But now, X-Men director Bryan Singer has confirmed that there is an idea for a crossover of the 20th Century Fox franchises that is "in play," whatever that means.

In a recent interview with Yahoo! Movies, Singer said when asked about a potential crossover:

"Those ideas are in play. That would be a natural match-up because they're both ensemble films and there is a natural mechanism by which to do it."

At first blush, this vague statement sounds like the ideas are being thrown around at the studio, rather than a confirmation that a film is in development. But he then gave a specific hint as to what that "natural mechanism" is, which makes it sound like there is an actual project in the works:

"It deals with time," he said. "That's all I'm going to say."

But although it seems that he's confirming that a film is in the works, it would be in the very earliest stages of development. While the X-Men franchise has proven that it has legs, it wouldn't make sense to move forward with a crossover until they know that Fantastic Four can generate interest as well. Singer said essentially the same thing, although he claimed that it also depends on the performance of X-Men: Apocalypse:

Opening quote
"We'll have to see how the films turn out," said Singer. "To just say you're going to do it would be a mistake, you have to see how the films evolve before you make that decision to completely commit to that."

Fantastic Four comes out in theaters on August 7, while X-Men: Apocalypse comes out on May 27, 2016.
