New Walking Dead Season Six Images Reveal New Characters from the Comics
It was announced at San Diego Comic Con that Merritt Wever and Ethan Embry are joining the cast of The Walking Dead in season six, but there was no word on which characters they would play. Now, EW has our first looks at the characters, both of whom are from the Walking Dead comics to varying degrees.

Wever (above), best known for her Emmy-winning performance in Nurse Jackie, plays the comics character Denise Cloyd, an Alexandrian medic who "becomes critical in the community of Alexandria after the death of Pete." Fans of the comics know that she also becomes instrumental to the plot when a certain member of the original cast sustains a life-threatening injury, so there's a good chance that comics arc will make it to the screen.

The above photo features Embry, who is best known for his lead role in the Showtime series Brotherhood. His character, whose name is Carter, is an amalgamation of several characters from the Walking Dead comics. "Ethan plays a combo of a few characters that we actually haven't hit yet or weren't able to hit in other characters," said showrunner Scott Gimple. "He is an Alexandrian, and has been there the whole time, just quite busy." From the footage of the character in the SDCC season six trailer, he seems to be an antagonist to Rick, and possibly a competitor for leadership of Alexandria.

And finally, here's our first official look at Heath, who was previously announced to be played by Corey Hawkins, a relative unknown who will next appear in the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton. Heath is a supply runner in Alexandria, similar to Glenn, and eventually forms a romantic relationship with Denise. Gimple said of Hawkins's performance, "He's terrific and I'm so excited to see him bring Heath to life. It's been fun and he dove in with both feet. He's tough and skeptical when the cameras are rolling, and then when they're off he's just like a goofy fan. He's really, really excited to be there."

The Walking Dead season six premieres on October 11 at 9pm on AMC.
