The Walking Dead has released new images of The Walking Dead season six, including the first images of Rick and Carol, and there's a hilarious, ridiculous story behind them:

Opening quote
"EW was photographing Andrew Lincoln, Melissa McBride, and Norman Reedus outside the former prison yard from season 3 and 4 of The Walking Dead. Lincoln and Reedus were behind McBride and Lincoln started laughing and was unable to maintain any actor composure... Lincoln NEVER breaks character and always maintains his American accent, even on a photo shoot. So this giggle fest was so strange to witness. Lincoln yelled for Reedus to stop and Reedus shouted, 'Why? No one's gonna see this!' After a little investigating, we realized Reedus had been trying to hold Lincoln's hand in the photos behind McBride's back."

So apparently in this picture, Andrew Lincoln is trying desperately not to laugh while Norman Reedus tries to hold his hand behind Melissa McBride:

But that's nothing compared to what happened next:

Opening quote
"Reedus knows how to make a great picture and also likes to give great imagery to his fans, so I asked the trio if we could shoot them from behind, and then I told Melissa McBride to turn her head towards the camera. They all complied, and then Reedus and Lincoln gave us something a little extra-taking their bromance to a whole other level. I love this picture because it just happened organically. Everyone needs a cheeky Norman Reedus."

This was likely fan service at least as much as it was a spontaneous desire to grab each other's butts, but still, we're sure this image will break Tumblr any minute now.

Incidentally, EW also had a real Walking Dead cover, as well as some actual, substantive details about the plot of season six:

First, executive producer and make-up effects expert Greg Nicotero previewed the timeline of the first episode, as well as that zombie sequence that will feature more zombies than we've ever seen on The Walking Dead before:

Opening quote
"We do play with time a little bit," said Nicotero. "And not in a traditional sense. We open right in the middle of this heightened action sequence, and we then jump around in that time frame to allow the audience to put together in their own minds what it is that we actually just saw."

And showrunner Scott Gimple shed a little more light on the season six storylines that will serve as a prequel to the comics, stating that there would be flashbacks to Alexandria's backstory, similar to the Terminus flashbacks:

Opening quote
"It's earlier in Alexandria, but not the beginning of Alexandria," said Gimple. "It's more character-based rather than the background of the place. There are some stories filled in regards to the comic that we haven't even gotten to yet-sort of prequeling some comic stories that are coming up, which I'm very excited about."

And the butt-grabber himself, Norman Reedus, claimed that the next season would involve "a lot of internal conflict. A lot of characters that you didn't see having beef are starting to have beef-there's a lot of mistrust."

This could be referring to many different characters, as there will likely be lots of tension between the Rickettes and the Alexandrians after Rick's execution of Pete. The trailer and early buzz also seemed to preview conflict between Rick and Morgan and/or Daryl, although it seems that the interpersonal conflict may find some kind of resolution by the end of the season.  Andrew Lincoln stated that the theme of next season is "them and us. When I read the first script, I called [showrunner Scott M. Gimple] up and went, 'You know, I say them and they, and us and we a lot.' He said, 'That's your journey, from them to us.'"

The Walking Dead season six returns on October 11 at 9pm on AMC.
