Mulder and Scully Have Broken Up at the Beginning of the X-Files Revival
< >
On the original X-Files series, Mulder and Scully had a classic will they-won't they dynamic for many, many years, before finally embarking on a romantic relationship at the end of the series. Then, in the film I Want to Believe, they were still in a relationship, and even ran away together at the end. But sadly for Mulder and Scully shippers, it has been confirmed that the two are no longer together at the beginning of Fox's revival miniseries.

At the TCA press tour, Fox showed reporters an exclusive scene from the X-Files premiere, in which Scully referred to herself as Mulder's "friend and physician." EW then confirmed with "a source close to Fox" that their relationship is over as of the first episode.

Honestly, I'm not surprised or upset by this, and I say that as a huge Mulder and Scully shipper. I want them to be together in the end, but it's much more difficult to write compelling relationships than compelling romantic tension (not everyone can be Friday Night Lights), which is why the will they-won't they formula is so popular. Although I Want to Believe was riddled with other problems, it is telling that the least successful X-Files outing was the only one in which Mulder and Scully were in a legitimate relationship. There will be much more dramatic tension in seeing them navigate an ex-lover relationship (and hopefully get back together).

The scene showed at TCA also revealed the significance of Annet Mahendru's character. We already knew that she played a potential alien abductee, but according to the footage breakdown from Zap2It, Mulder is convinced that she is not only telling the truth, but is the "key to everything."

Here's the full footage breakdown:

Opening quote
In the scene, Scully arrives at Mulder's house in a panic.
"Mulder, you hang up on me, I don't hear from you all day, you're on some jag about the X-Files?!" says Scully.
"I finally figured it out, all these years we've been deceived," says Mulder "I couldn't call you because it's gonna sound crazy. Scully, you gotta trust me on this."
But Scully says Mulder is "on fire believing" that he's onto "some truth that will save the world." She cautions that it'll be his undoing. "You want to believe, you so badly want to believe!"

Mulder insists that newscaster Tad O'Malley (Joel McHale) is right, it's not "an alien conspiracy." "The truth is out there and Tad O'Malley's gonna broadcast it," says Mulder.
"Mulder, listen to me - as your friend and as a physician, you are on dangerous ground here," pleads a concerned Scully.
But she is stopped dead in her tracks by Mulder revealing Sveta (Annet Mahendru, "The Americans"), a victim of alien abduction, is in his house. "She's the key to everything," says Mulder. "Sveta is the key."
