Josh Trank Claims He Had a 'Fantastic Version' of Fantastic Four that You'll Never See
Fantastic Four is currently getting eviscerated by critics, which disappoints us greatly. By all accounts, this should have been a good movie; in addition to its comics pedigree, it boasts a fantastic young cast and a director who has experience making character-driven, critically acclaimed superhero films. But Josh Trank wasn't the only force behind the film, and he took to Twitter last night to give a quickly-deleted defense that essentially blamed the studio for how terrible the movie is:

On the one hand, it seems dangerous to be so confident that critics would have loved his original vision of Fantastic Four; on the other hand, we kind of believe it. Superhero movies have been ruined by studio interference before (Spider-Man 3, anyone?), and it makes sense that he wouldn't be able to bring a cohesive vision to life if Fox didn't have faith in it. Since one of the major criticisms of Fantastic Four was its inability to commit to either being a fun blockbuster or a character drama, it would make sense that there were too many cooks in the kitchen.

Max Landis, who wrote the screenplay for Chronicle, put forth this hypothesis in a long Twitter rant late last night (read from the bottom-up):

We were hoping that Fantastic Four would have the same sense of character development and offbeat tone as Chronicle, but it rings true that the studio would get cold feet about staking that much money on such a risky venture. Maybe Trank should go back to directing little indies, because we'd much rather see more movies like Chronicle than Fantastic Four.
