New Trailer for Indie Sci-Fi 'Harbinger Down' Pays Homage to The Thing, Alien, Jaws, and More
A new trailer for the indie sci-fi horror film Harbinger Down is out, and it looks like a hodge podge of classic sci-fi horror films, for better and for worse:

The premise is simple and somewhat familiar: the crew of a fishing vessel discovers a downed Russian spacecraft with the preserved corpse of a cosmonaut, which contains nasty extraterrestrial parasitic baddies that can transform human hosts into Xenomorph-type things. It has the paranoia of The Thing, the body horror of Alien, and the claustrophobia of both.

This sounds like a positive comment, as both of these movies are amazing, but a movie needs to do more than reference the genre to actually pay homage to it, and it's unclear that this movie will do anything aside from name-dropping better movies. It's cute when a character says, "We're gonna need a bigger bucket" a la Jaws, but it's pretty on-the-nose.

That being said, a suspicious similarity to pretty much every other sci-fi horror film out there isn't really an indictment for something that's clearly meant to be a solid B movie. And since it's coming out today, it won't have much competition for the sci-fi contingent, as you'd probably rather see a derivative Alien wannabe than that soulless, joyless Fantastic Four reboot.
