Listen to a Crowd's Reaction at a 1977 Screening of Star Wars and Wish You Could Have Been There
< >
I was barely a sparkle in my father's eye when Star Wars was first unleashed on the world back in 1977, but I still remember the first time I watched it on VHS with my older brother. As fond as that memory is, there's a big part of me that wishes I was old enough to have been in the theaters for those first screenings of what would become one of the greatest Hollywood stories ever told. Luckily, a Youtube user has uncovered some original audio footage from a theater screening back in 1977, which when it is cut together with the right footage, is almost enough to make you feel as if you were watching it for the first time.

The audio, which you can listen to below, is from the climactic moments of the Battle of Yavin. Watch it, and just try not to pump your fist when the Millennium Falcon swoops in for the assist.

Even though we've all seen those moments a hundred times, listening to the applause and cheers of that first-timer audience is enough to make you want to rush home and watch it all over again. But, while the Battle of Yavin was certainly a big moment in Star Wars lore, it's not the biggest. I would love to hear an original in-theater audio track from The Empire Strikes Back's big paternal reveal, but alas, that doesn't seem to exist so we can just make do with watching these adorable children witness the moment for the first time.

But it's not just the original trilogy that can elicit a strong emotional reaction. We were in the crowd when the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was screened at Star Wars Celebration, and as the video below shows, things got rather emotional. What you can't see are the countless grown men and women weeping tears of joy and hugging their fellow Star Wars fans at the moment Han and Chewie appear, but rest assured, that really happened.

So while we will never be able to go back in history and watch the original trilogy for the first time, it's just possible that in 40 years time, people will be looking at The Force Awakens and wishing they were there. Roll on December 18th.
