NBC has just released three minutes of behind-the-scenes footage from the upcoming Heroes Reborn, and according to returning star Greg Grunberg, the revival is "Heroes on steroids":

In this video, we get to see the making of a few of the scenes that have become famous from the initial trailers, including Zachary Levi's Luke executing an entire support group and Masi Oka's Hiro swordfighting with a Hydra-like villain in a parking garage. The footage reveals that Levi's character may be even more villainous than we originally thought, as Levi and creator Tim Kring really emphasize that he's being cast against type. This is a smart move, as villains are that much scarier when they're played by a lovable actor (it's similar to "scary little girl" syndrome).

And in addition to Grunberg's sound bite about the relationship between Heroes and Heroes Reborn, Kring described the miniseries as a resolution to the argument Hayden Panettiere's Claire and Jack Coleman's HRG had in the series finale:

Opening quote
"'Heroes Reborn' is a reboot of the original," said Kring. "The end of the original series, Claire, the cheerleader, outed the fact that these people with powers exist. She and her father had had this huge argument that the world would not accept these people, so when we come back five years later, sure enough, her father was right."
Closing quote

Possible spoilers ahead! (Click to reveal)

HRG was indeed right, as the series opens with "Evos" being persecuted and/or killed. And even more tragically, Claire, who insisted that the world would accept them, is already dead when the show begins.

A new promo has also been released, which features the new Heroes character Tommy, a typical teenage boy played by Once Upon a Time's Robbie Kay:

As a contrast to Kring's depressing statements, this promo makes Heroes Reborn seem downright optimistic for the first time, showing Tommy using his powers for good (and, presumably, to get the girl), and generally having a more typical superhero living-up-to-your-potential arc than we've ever seen from the series.

Heroes Reborn also sees the return Sendhil Ramamurthy, Jimmy Jean-Louis and Cristine Rose, and stars Kiki Sukezane, Danika Yarosh, Judith Shekoni, Ryan Guzman, Henry Zebrowski, Gatlin Green, and Dylan Bruce as new characters to the franchise. The revival is slated as a 13-episode miniseries, with potential for more seasons if the show performs well. It will premiere on September 24 on NBC.
