Lionsgate to Develop a Major Blockbuster Adaptation of Borderlands Video Game Franchise
The hit video game franchise Borderlands is coming to the big screen. Lionsgate today announced that they have greenlit a project to produce a major blockbuster movie based on the dystopian sci-fi video game, Borderlands. The movie will be produced by Iron Man, Spider-Man and X-Men producer, Avi Arad and his son Ari.

Borderlands sees players exploring the planet of Pantora, which prior to the games setting was abandoned by wealthy corporations for fear of attacks from alien hordes. Players must scavenge through the wastelands of Pandora, raiding industrial trash repositories and small settlements for everything they need to survive.

Lionsgate said they will strive to make sure that their adaptation of Borderlands matches the game's rough and ready style, lacing it with the same kind of attitude that has helped make the franchise such a huge hit.

Opening quote
Part of our strategy in entering the game space under Peter Levin has been to source new brands with built-in audiences that will translate into great films and television shows. The 'Borderlands' games don't pull any punches, and we'll make the movie with the same in-your-face attitude that has made the series a blockbuster mega-franchise."
Closing quote

As movies like Mad Max: Fury Road and Hunger Games have proven, dystopias are wildly popular in Hollywood right now, so the opportunity to take a dystopian world that already has a fervent following and bring it to the big screen is a ripe one for Lionsgate. Borderlands' style and sci-fi themes are perfect for a funny, action-packed blockbuster, and with new entries into the video game franchise being planned, there's a seemingly endless source of material for the filmmakers to tap into.

Let's just hope they have the grapes to make this an R-Rated movie.
