New Two-Part X-Files Trailer Teases the Return of the Smoking Man
The newest trailer for the X-Files revival series aired in two parts during Gotham and Minority Report last night (a naked, desperate bid for ratings for two floundering series), and it teases the reconciliation of Mulder and Scully (at least for work) and the return of everyone's favorite villain, the Smoking Man.

In the first part of the promo, Mulder reflects on the cessation of their investigation in 2002, and then says that their work on the X-Files is "the key to everything." But of course, he "can't do it alone," so he calls Scully, who picks up the phone like she's just seen a ghost and breaks my little heart.

Then the second previews the return of two of my favorite supporting characters, trusty ally AD Skinner and the nefarious Smoking Man. Skinner helps lay the foundation for a social commentary about the NSA, as Mulder tells him that the government is spying on us, ostensibly for our protection, but we've "never been in more danger." Chris Carter stated back in June that where the original series explored the paranoia and anxieties of a pre-9/11 America, the new series will explore the limitations placed on our civil rights in a post-9/11 America.

And finally, the Smoking Man returns. We don't get to see his face, but we hear his voice and catch a glimpse of his signature cigarette. If you need a reminder of how awesome he is, here's the classic scene from his acclaimed standalone episode, "Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man."

The X-Files miniseries will debut on Fox with a two-night premiere on Sunday, January 24, and Monday, January 25.
