NASA Will Hold a Science of Star Trek Convention Next Weekend
Star Trek is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and the franchise is celebrating with both Star Trek Beyond and a new TV series, Star Trek Discovery, coming in early 2017. Now, NASA is joining in the birthday festivities, and honoring this prescient work of sci-fi with several "Star Trek Talks," which will discuss the real science behind the beloved TV show and films.

Star Trek has predicted several modern technologies, like cell phones, tablets, and tractor beams. But at Star Trek: Mission New York, NASA will discuss Star Trek's influence on the exploration of the real-life final frontier (no reference to the terrible fifth movie intended). In a series of five talks, NASA experts will lecture on topics like the discovery of exoplanets, astrobiology, and the search for extraterrestrial life.

Opening quote
"NASA's Trek Talks at Star Trek: Mission New York will give fans the opportunity to be fully immersed in the fascinating ways in which Star Trek has impacted space exploration, from paving the way for new technologies, to fostering an interest in the exploring beyond Earth, and dreaming up alien life."
