Outer Places Is Coming to You Live From Silicon Valley Comic-Con 2017!
< >
When Jon Kesh (our night editor, pictured left) and I (right) arrived in sunny San Jose for Silicon Valley Comic-Con, we had two goals in mind: 1) to cover the coolest sci-fi/science events and panels at SVCC, and 2) to locate Adam Savage while in costume. For those who don't know, Savage is legendary for walking among Con-goers in disguise. And we will not rest until we hunt him down.

We're going to be sending a steady stream of photos, videos, stories, and livestreams over the weekend, including coverage of our highly anticipated panel, Droids and Death Stars: The Science of Star Wars, so keep an eye on Outer Places' Facebook and Twitter and watch the hashtag #SVCC!

Here are some of the events and panels we'll be covering:

Friday, April 21st

Syfy and Digital Domain Present VR-Powered Immersive Second-Screen Experiences
Syfy and Domain are experimenting with new ways to get people hyped about movies and shows by creating promotional VR experiences, sort of like interactive demos or trailers. Will we get the full experience of falling off a spaceship and falling through a planet's atmosphere? We're sure as hell going to suggest it when the Q&A comes.

Steve Wozniak's SVCC Tech Showcase (Press Exclusive)

This is a press-only event, where we get to preview that next-level stuff that they can't show the public yet. Some of the highlights we're looking forward to are:
  • Acura's NSX supercar
  • Finalist Tricorders of the $10M Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE competition
  • SoftBank Robotics' Pepper the Robot
  • 8i's mixed reality app, Holo, where you snap a photo or video with Buzz Aldrin, aka #HoloBuzz
Anytime someone says "Hey, you want to come check out these life-like, hand-designed tricorders?", there is no answer but "Tell us when and where."

SATURDAY, April 22nd

The Art of Ralph McQuarrie: Star Wars and Beyond
This is a chance to get a close look at the legendary concept artist behind Star Wars, and hopefully some behind-the-scenes stories about the making of the starships, props, and movies. This is a must for Star Wars nerds and trivia geeks like us.

Virgin Galactic: Opening Space to Change the World (For Good)
There was a time when Virgin Galactic was the world's first, best hope for commercial space travel. Then Elon Musk and SpaceX came along and started announcing that they were going to settle Mars, send people around the Moon, and keep the Borg out of our solar system. Now it's time to see what Virgin Galactic has planned—new spacesuits? Their own rocket program? A secret moonbase? We'll see.

NASA in Silicon Valley: Journey to Mars
NASA has said in the past that they're not racing SpaceX to put astronauts on Mars, but that doesn't mean they're not planning on getting there (or investigating the Red Planet). This event should give us a better idea about what NASA's got in the works for Mars, and what colonization might look like. It's funny how fast space colonization went from sci-fi to public policy. We're certainly not complaining.

Architects of Storytelling through VR and AR

Every time we talk to filmmakers, writers, and producers about how VR is going to change media, the answer is either a helpless shrug or wide-eyed yelling that it will destroy everything. We're at the beginning of a new age of storytelling, one where we may stop being passive observers and start being part of the action. What will the future look like? That's what we're hoping to find out.

Droids and Death Stars: The Science of Star Wars
This is it, Outer Places' signature sold-out Comic-Con panel, coming to SVCC for the first time! We're going to be livestreaming the panel (wi-fi permitting) and answering fan questions, so be sure to check it out! If you have questions you'd like us to answer, send us a message at our Facebook page or tweet at us @outerplaces!

Star Trek Continues Screening and Q&A
In case you haven't heard, there is a fan-made Star Trek series featuring Grant Imahara as Sulu and Scotty's son as Scotty. Here's the official description for the screening:
Opening quote
Finishing the original 5-year mission, 'Star Trek Continues' is a Geekie, Webby, Telly, and Global Accolade award-winning fan series created by and starring Vic Mignogna (Fullmetal Alchemist). Also starring Grant Imahara (Mythbusters) as Sulu, and Chris Doohan, son of the original 'Scotty' reprising his father's iconic role. Episode 8 "Still Treads the Shadow" was written by Original Series writer Judy Burns, and stars our special guest Rekha Sharma (Battlestar Galactica)!

SUNDAY, April 23rd

Holodeck 101: The Intersection of Technology, Worldbuilding, and Gaming
Bloodborne, Skyrim, Dark Souls, Eve Online, and Fallout. There's an art to building worlds from scratch, and that's what this panel is all about: how to do it, and how to bring it to life in a video game.

Neural Prosthetics: The Future of the Human Brain
Everyone knows brain implants are the key dividing line between the present day and a dystopian cyberpunk future. Will we be able to see in infrared, or communicate without speaking? Will there be a black market for wetware and hacking software that can crack people's brains? Who slips into my robot body and whispers to my ghost?

Artificial Intelligence: Is 'Westworld' a Preview of Our Future?
We wrote an article about this a few months ago, and our impression was that yes, we will have robots that are indistinguishable from humans in the next few decades. In fact, we also hosted a panel at Columbia University about the future of AI and came out and said that before we decide whether or not robots can be considered human, we need to decide what being human means.

An Hour With Adam Savage
Silicon Valley has a room called the "Adam Savage Cosplay Workshop and Lounge." We're desperately hoping to get in, if only to touch his magnificent beard. We're looking forward to hearing about what he and his awesome website, Tested, are up to next.

A Conversation with Tory and Kari about Science, Entertainment, Mythbusters and Beyond
This is pretty much an hour of fan questions about anything and everything science and geek-related. Some of the topics on deck: White Rabbit Project, Star Wars, art, culture, and blowing stuff up.
